Dopo averci già presentato in articoli precedenti dei suoi amici maestri e artisti marziali di fama internazionale, questa volta ai lettori di QuotidianPost fa dono di una delle sue amicizie più recenti, Monsieur Abdel QISSI, CAMPIONE di boxe degli anni 80 (8 incontri disputati di cui 5 vinti, 2 pareggiati e 1 perso). Abdel QISSI è ora coach di questa nobile arte, seppur già noto come attore negli anni 90 in due famosi film di Jean Claude Van Damme.

In seguito avrà il ruolo di Khan , il combattente della Mongolia che nella sfida finale del film “LA PROVA” del 1996 affronta Christopher Dubois (alias Jean Claude VAN DAMME). Monsieur Abdel QISSI è il fratello di Michel (Mohamed) QISSI. Quest’ultimo è famoso per aver interpretato il lottatore di boxe tailandese Tong Po che affronta Kurt Sloane (alias Jean Claude VAN DAMME) nel film KICKBOXER – Il nuovo guerriero del 1989.

(English version) Known in his memorable role of Attila, the cold and burly professional fighter who faces Lion Gaultier (alias Jean Claude VAN DAMME) in his latest fight of the 1990 movie “LIONHEART”. Chi è ABDEL QISSI – Who is ABDEL QISSI?

Mi chiamo Abdelkrim Qissi, sono nato a Oujda nel nord del Marocco nel 1960, ho vissuto lì fino al 1964 poi i miei genitori sono emigrati in Belgio, con mio fratello Mohamed (Tong-Po) ed io. Ho vissuto a Bruxelles fino ad oggi.

(English version) My name is Abdelkrim Qissi, I was born in Oujda in northern Morocco in 1960, I lived there until 1964 then my parents emigrated to Belgium, with my brother Mohamed and myself. From then until today I have lived in Brussels.

Come è nata la sua passione per la boxe e poi per il cinema? A tal proposito, qual è la migliore soddisfazione che la boxe le ha regalato e quale invece quella di attore?

Da giovanissimo amavo il cinema, non solo i film ma anche i cinema, le loro atmosfere, i loro colori e tutta l’atmosfera che emanavano. Guardavo in media due film ogni fine settimana e durante la settimana dopo la scuola divoravo fumetti. La mia passione per il cinema non ha mai smesso di esistere. Allo stesso tempo ero un fan di Mohamed Ali, sapevo tutto della sua vita, della sua gioventù, dei suoi titoli, del suo percorso come boxer e come uomo in generale, ne ero un vero fan, e lo sono ancora oggi .

Verso i 14 anni ho bussato alla porta di una palestra di pugilato situata nel seminterrato di un centro sportivo, e lì ho trascorso tutta la mia carriera come pugile dilettante e professionista. La boxe e il cinema mi hanno lasciato tante soddisfazioni, in primis il rapporto umano, ho conosciuto tante persone, grazie al fatto di essere stato un campione di boxe e un attore conosciuto in tutto il mondo. Ma soprattutto come allenatore di boxe la soddisfazione è stata ancora più grande e più forte. La boxe mi ha permesso di conoscermi a fondo e di superarmi nella fatica dell’allenamento e questo ha rafforzato la mia mente.

QUESTION: How was borned your passion for boxing and then for acting in films? Consequently, what is the best satisfaction that the first gave you and which the second?

(English version) When I was very young I loved cinema, not only films but also cinemas, their atmospheres, their colors and all the atmosphere they emanated. I watched an average of two movies every weekend and ate comics during the week after school. My passion for cinema has never ceased to exist. At the same time I was a fan of Mohamed Ali, I knew everything about his life, his youth, his titles, his career as a boxer and as a man in general, I was a real fan of him, and I still am today.

At the age of 14 I knocked on the door of a boxing gym located in the basement of a sports center, and there I spent my entire career as an amateur and professional boxer. Boxing and cinema have left me a lot of satisfactions, first of all the human relationship, I met many people, thanks to the fact that I was a boxing champion and an actor known all over the world. But above all as a boxing coach the satisfaction was even greater and stronger. Boxing allowed me to get to know myself thoroughly and overcome the fatigue of training and this strengthened my mind.

L’incontro e l’amicizia con Jean Claude VAN DAMME – The meeting and friendship with Jean Claude VAN DAMME

Lei ha conosciuto Van Damme al centro sportivo di Ixelles (Bruxelles – Belgio). Quando è successo esattamente questo primo incontro e com’ è avvenuto? Ci racconti qualche aneddoto di quel momento.

Jean Claude praticava il karate nello stesso centro sportivo, la sala del karate era appena sopra la sala del pugilato. Come tutti gli adolescenti, ci siamo avvicinati subito grazie allo sport, siamo diventati subito amici, poi quando mio fratello Mohamed è arrivato a sua volta nel centro è diventato molto amico di Jean Claude, così venne anche a casa nostra e conobbe molto bene i miei genitori ed io conobbi molto bene i suoi e sua sorella Véronique che divenne anche mia amica.

A Jean Claude piaceva recitare con me e mio fratello per mettere in scena una storia e ci trovavano sempre in tre a interpretare una parte, solo che ogni volta Jean Claude voleva interpretare l’eroe, mentre Mohamed ed io dovevamo fare sempre i cattivi. Ahahah!

QUESTION: You met Van Damme at the Ixelles sports center. (Brussels – Belgium). When exactly did this first meeting and how did it happen? Tell us some anecdotes from that moment.

(English version) Jean Claude practiced karate in the same sports center, the karate hall was just above the boxing hall. Like all teenagers, we quickly got closer thanks to sport, we quickly became friends, then when my brother Mohamed arrived in the centre he became a close friend of Jean Claude, who came to my house and even knew my parents very well, as I knew his parents very well, as well as his sister Véronique who also became my friend.

Jean Claude liked to act with my brother and me to stage a story and there were always three of us playing a part, except that every time Jean Claude wanted to play the hero, while Mohamed and I always had to be bad guys. Ahahah!

Il film LIONHEART – The movie LIONHEARTH

Nel film del 1990 “Lionhearth”, lei ha interpretato Atilla, l’ultimo sfidante di Leon Gaultier, il personaggio interpretato da Van Damme. Cosa ricorda di quel suo debutto e com’è stato coreografare il combattimento per la prima volta con Van Damme in un film?

In Lionheart, Atilla è stato il mio primo ruolo, ma per me è stato facile, come se lo avessi fatto tutta la vita, sicuramente grazie alla mia carriera di pugile e alla mia passione per il cinema oltre alla presenza di Jean Claude e di mio fratello. Anche la coreografia del combattimento con Jean Claude è stata facile perché ci conoscevamo molto bene. Inoltre Jean Claude è un grande coreografo.

QUESTION: In the 1990 film Lionhearth you played Attila, the ultimate challenger to Lyon Gaultier (Van Damme). What do you remember about your debut and what was it like to choreograph the fight, for the first time in a movie, with Van Damme?

(English version ) In Lionheart, Attila was my first role, but for me it was easy, as if I had done it all my life, certainly thanks to my career as a boxer and my passion for cinema as well as the presence of Jean Claude and my brother. The choreography of the fight with Jean Claude was also easy because we knew each other very well. Furthermore, Jean Claude is a great choreographer.

Il film LA PROVA – The movie THE QUEST

Nel 1996 nel film “La Prova”, sempre con Van Damme, lei interpreta Khan il lottatore della Mongolia che affronta, dopo una serie di altri combattimenti, Christopher Dubois (Van Damme) nella sfida finale. Cosa le è piaciuto di più di questo film e quali ricordi ha ancora di questa seconda interpretazione?

Tutto è stato bello come in “Lionhearth”, ma nel “La Prova” ho avuto la possibilità di conoscere Roger Moore e la Thailandia, inoltre ho imparato molto sulla professione di regista soprattutto a livello di realizzazione, ciò grazie ad una squadra straordinaria guidata da Peter Mac Donald, Moshe Diamond e altri del team tecnico e tutto questo per quasi 5 mesi. Ho imparato molto e consolidato quello che avevo già imparato a Los Angeles durante Lionheart. Penso che quei film siano stati un grande successo per Jean Claude.

QUESTION: In 1996 in the film “The Quest”, again with Van Damme, you played Khan the Mongolian fighter who faces, after a series of other fights, Christopher Dubois (Van Damme) in the final challenge. What did you like most about that film, and what memories do you still have of this your second interpretation?

(English version) Everything was beautiful as in “Lionhearth”, but in “The Quest” I had the opportunity to meet Roger Moore and Thailand, and I also learned a lot about the profession of director, especially in terms of realization, thanks to an extraordinary team led by Peter Mac Donald, Moshe Diamond and others from the technical team and all this for almost 5 months. I learned a lot and consolidated what I had already learned in Los Angeles during Lionheart. I think those films were a huge success for Jean Claude.

Il film THE ORDER- The movie THE ORDER

L’ultima volta che ha lavorato con Van Damme è stato nel 2001 nel film “The Order” in cui interpretava il ruolo di un mercante arabo che accidentalmente si scontra con Rudy Cafmeyer (Van Damme) durante una fuga. Lì il suo ruolo è stato più marginale ma comunque di spessore e di grande azione, quindi le chiedo qual è stato l’ingrediente principale che ha comunque reso quella lotta, certamente breve, ma molto intensa?

É vero che quella lotta è stata breve, ma piuttosto bella; è stata una strizzatina d’occhio di Jean Claude nei miei confronti, per farmi piacere, cosa che è riuscito a fare. La particolarità del nostro terzo incontro è che questa volta non c’è nessun vincitore e nessun cattivo, ahahah, in particolare ho avuto il piacere di essere di nuovo su un set di grandi professionisti del cinema e ancora una volta sono cresciuto enormemente grazie a loro. Inoltre ho incontrato il signor Charlton Heston.

QUESTION: The last time you worked with Van Damme was in 2001 in the movie “The Order” in which you played the role of an Arab merchant who accidentally collides with Rudy Cafmeyer (Van Damme) during an escape. There your role was more marginal but always thick and of great action so I ask you what was the main ingredient that made that fight anyway, albeit short, but very intense?

(English version ) It is true that that fight was short, but rather beautiful; it was a wink from Jean Claude to me, to please me, which he managed to do. The peculiarity of our third meeting is that this time there is no winner and no villain, hahaha, in particular I had the pleasure of being back on a set of great film professionals and once again I have grown enormously thanks to them. I also met with Mr. Charlton Heston.

La produzione del film LOPAK – The production of the movie LOPAK

In quali altri film la potremo ancora vedere e quali sono i suoi progetti cinematografici?

Attualmente ho appena realizzato il mio film LOPAK sono in piena post-produzione uscirà nelle sale se tutto va bene, all’inizio di settembre 2022. Interpreto il personaggio principale (Moloss) è un personaggio che si sente investito di una missione, quella di guarire un’umanità che considera malata. Pensa di possedere il metodo per farlo, attirerà persone intorno a lui, ma nella sua ricerca agirà male credendo di fare del bene. Come finirà?

QUESTION: In what other films will we still be able to see you and what are your other film projects?

(English version) Currently I have just made my film LOPAK are in full post-production will be released in theaters hopefully, at the beginning of September 2022. I play the main character (Moloss) is a character who feels invested with a mission, that to heal a humanity that he considers sick. He thinks he has the way to do it, he will attract people around him, but in his search he will act badly believing he is doing good. Will he succeed?

Si allena ancora nella boxe? Insegna anche questo sport? E se ci sono, che progetti ha riguardo a questa nobile arte?

Insegno ancora boxe, oggi sono un allenatore privato perché non voglio più tenere una palestra e un gruppo di pugili, la mia filosofia verso questo sport è cambiata. Oggi insegno come usare l’allenamento della boxe per avere successo nella vita, e non più per una semplice lotta con un avversario, perché il vero avversario è te stesso ed è contro di lui che devi vincere, la vera lotta è la lotta contro il tuo ego. La mia speranza è quella di dirigere il mio prossimo film, la storia di un forte rapporto umano con il background della boxe inglese.

QUESTION: Do you still train in boxing? Do you teach it? And if there are any, what projects do you have regarding this your noble art?

(English version) I still teach boxing, today I am a private coach because I no longer want to keep a gym and a group of boxers, my philosophy towards this sport has changed. Today I teach how to use boxing training to be successful in life, and no longer for a simple fight with an opponent, because the real opponent is yourself and it is against him that you have to win, the real fight is the fight against your ego. My hope is to direct my next film, the story of a strong human relationship with the english boxing background.
